As stated last month with Sega’s parent company, Sega Sammy Holdings having a “group structure reform” on putting their efforts to the PC and mobile markets, many thought that Sega would still make console games in low quantity with their efforts mostly focusing on PC and smartphones. Well, it has been officially confirmed by Japan Today that they will depart from the console market in putting in more effort to the PC and mobile markets, as evident with the next Sonic game called Sonic Runners to be a mobile free-to-play game, after the massive failure that was Sonic Boom.

Speaking of Sonic, in an interview with 4Gamer, head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka confirmed that the Sonic series will continue to be made on consoles as he personality doesn’t see future installments of the franchise not be on them.
“Please rest assured, I personally have no plans to stop making Sonic games for home consoles.”

The headline is misleading – I took it to mean Sega had decided to not make consoles anymore to which I thought “what console have they made since Dreamcast?”, not that Sega was abandoning being a third-party developer for gaming consoles.

The abandoning part can go both ways for Sega not making consoles to not making more games as a third-party publisher on consoles. The headline was towards them not making more games for consoles expect Sonic. The Sonic bit was updated news to the whole ordeal.
