Today marks the 25th anniversary of Mega Man and Capcom is planning a year of activities to celebrate the iconic hero.
[alert type=”yellow”]Mega Man, known as Rockman (ロックマン, Rokkuman) in Japan, is a video game franchise from Capcom, starring the robot character Mega Man, or one of his many counterparts. The series comprises well over fifty releases, making it Capcom’s most prolific franchise. As of December 31, 2010, the series has sold approximately twenty-nine million copies worldwide. The Mega Man games began in 1987 with the first Mega Man game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game and those that followed comprise the original series, which has since been followed by several spin-off series in the same fictional universe.[/alert]
Kicking off the celebration is Street Fighter X Mega Man, a new free Mega Man game available for PC download beginning today. A true collaboration between a company and its fans, Street Fighter X Mega Man was created and developed by Singapore native Seow Zong Hui (aka “Sonic”) with direction and support provided by Capcom. The game stars Mega Man and features eight brand-new Street Fighter-themed levels and bosses inspired by the legendary fighting game series. Each boss character will utilize their individual strategies and special moves against Mega Man, as players attempt to mega blast their way through each uniquely charming 8-bit world.
Throughout the year, Capcom also plans to release the side-scrolling classics Mega Man to Mega Man 6 as downloads for Nintendo 3DS. Beginning December 27 with the original Mega Man, these 8-bit classics will be available in a staggered schedule into 2013.
