How to ready your PC for Windows 10

Better be ready!

How to ready your PC for Windows 10

Windows 10 is almost available, the clock is ticking, kind of like in the new Terminator movie, Genisys, on July 29th Microsoft finally launches the longly awaited Windows 10, unlike previous iterations, Windows 10 will be free to those with legitimate copy of either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

This article is meant to help those who haven’t been able to reserve their copy of Window 10 and those who already did but don’t know what security measures to take.

1) Decide whether you want to download Windows 10 on launch day.

As soon as it launches, everyone will be downloading, this could lead to massive cluttering of the servers in the worst case scenario, although Microsoft seems to have taken measures, other issues that could come up are incompatibilities and things of that nature with your hardware, also, some software that worked on prior versions of windows might not work on Windows 10, if you feel insecure about it, it might be wise to wait a few days, at least 3, for reviews and impressions of thousands of users. If it helps you, here are the minimum requirements for Windows 10:

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  • Free hard disk space: 16 GB
  • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
  • A Microsoft account and Internet access

If you don’t see an issue with any of the above and/or already decided you want it on launch day, skip to step 2.

2) Reserve or make sure you reserved it.

Microsoft decided to take measures to distribute Windows 10, downloads will be available in waves to avoid server cluttering. This means that you need the Get Windows 10 app seen on the right. If you don’t see the app in the Taskbar it could be because of one of the following issues:

Get Windows 10 app location

Get Windows 10 app location

  • Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
  • Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
  • You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
  • Your device is not running genuine Windows.

It could also happen if you’re on a network managed by an IT. If none of those reasons apply to you and you still don’t see the Get Windows 10 app follow the next steps:

  1. Go to https://mega.co.nz/#!mM5SGAyI!04dHp4VZMJXbDWl01jwahwstmeWsdJPcweuvt2s87DY and download the file.
  2. Copy the win10fix_full.bat file to somewhere on the desktop.
  3. Right click the file and click run as administrator.
  4. Follow the screen instruction until to come to main menu screen.
  5. On main menu screen do step 1 first and check if you have the updates installed and and then press any key it will take you back to the main menu.
  6. Now do step 2 which only takes 1 second and should have the icon in the taskbar.
  7. If step 2 didn’t work, try step 3 and it that doesn’t work try step 4.

Please note this tool is not officially from Microsoft. It is not sanctioned by them but it has been reviewed by me, it is not malicious and certainly makes it easier to get the process done.

Once you have reserved your copy, all files will be downloaded in the background, you will complete your download and begin installation after July 29, depending on when Microsoft decides to let your PC download the updates.

3) Backup your important files

Although the Windows 10 upgrade isn’t supposed to overwrite your personal files, keyword: supposed, you should always backup those important files from the office, those files that took you too long to download or those Steam games that took you too long to download, it is best if you backup using a pendrive or any external drive unit.

That’s it, this should cover you on what you need to do, if you have any issue let me know in the comments.
