Today Playtonic Games announced that they’re teaming up with Team 17 to help with specific support areas of Yooka-Laylee. Team 17 will be responsible for the technical side of game development, including certification, localization, and store management.
Meaning that Playtonic Games can focus on actually developing Yooka-Laylee, while Team 17 handles all the distribution aspects of the game. According to studio head Gavin Price, the partnership is needed because Playtonic wants to make sure fans get level of service they deserve:
Team17 has significant experience in making the most of releasing a game. Personally I feel it would be a great shame if after our great Kickstarter success, we delivered on our promise of a great game and then it underperformed sales-wise because we didn’t have the knowledge, or made a mistake in the way we released or marketed the game. Thanks to our Kickstarter backers, we’re on a really positive trajectory and Team17 is acting like a booster for us on top of that by handling non-game dev tasks.
Gavin Price also reiterated that there is no physical version of Yooka-Laylee planned, so that’s what we should expect at the moment, Playtonic wants to make sure the digital launch is the best, so maybe once that’s out of the way, it could be possible to see a physical release similar to Shovel Knight’s.
