As confirmed by WIRED yesterday, Sony is working on bringing PlayStation 2 games for PlayStation 4 users.
“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation,” a Sony representative told WIRED via email. “We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”
This question sent to Sony on the matter was sparked by gaming sites like Digital Foundry finding out that three of the Star Wars PlayStation 2 games in the new Darth Vader PS4 bundle, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter were running via emulation. Digital Foundry has a video on the manner showing how all three Star Wars games do run under some kind of emulation on the PlayStation 4 with upscaled visuals, improved frame rate, and trophy support.
So for the time being, PlayStation 4 owners who bought the Darth Varder bundle are the only ones who are able to play these PlayStation 2 games, since they’re not in the PlayStation Store yet. Only the various editions of Star Wars Battlefront and Super Star Wars are up for purchase. Sony has no further comment on the matter at hand and will most likely announced the emulation in the upcoming PlayStation Experience event in December 5-6 of this year. So stay turned on the matter here at Stagger’d in the near future!
