Codenamed Maverick Hunter, Armature Studios, studio founded by former developers of Metroid Prime began work on the gritty Mega Man FPS that would have maintain the series core designs of platforming and weapon-stealing with the addition of retooling the story of Mega Man X to a trilogy in which X, the protagonist of Mega Man X, would eventually becomes jaded from fighting robots and turn on his creators. Heck the third game in the trilogy would have had gamers assume the role of Zero, another character in Mega Man X, would destroy Mega Man who in the course of two games had grown incredibly powerful and infinitely intelligent.
Sadly, the development of Maverick Hunter was short lived. A playable prototype was produced, but the game was cancelled by a mere six months into its development before series creator Keiji Inafune left Capcom. It’s pretty sad that another Mega Man game is cancelled like Legends 3, Universe and Mega Man Online. It’s like Capcom won’t let their mascot Mega Man see the light of day. :((
