It’s no secret that Microsoft’s Xbox brand hasn’t been popular with Japan since the original Xbox days. The Xbox 360 sold an abysmal 1.6 million units over the last six years compare to the original Xbox selling just 2 million units while it was on the market between 2002 and 2005. Microsoft’s competitors Sony and Nintendo on the other hand did better with the PlayStation 3 selling 6.3 million and Nintendo Wii selling over 12.7 million units.
Yet despite it’s failure in Japan, Microsoft is still pushing on towards getting their Xbox brand to get popular with it’ upcoming next gen console, the Xbox One.
Microsoft’s Don Mattrick confirmed with a roundtable at OXM that the company is still “committed to Japan.”
“We continue to build on our partnerships, we continue to build on our offerings for consumers inside of that space. We think it’s an important market. And we’ll continue building on the working investment that we’ve done over all these years.”
