I think we’re well past the era when mascots exist in video games.
In a recent interview, Lead System Architect for the PlayStation 4 and creator of Knack, Mark Cerny was asked if he saw Knack as the official mascot for the PS4. He answered with, “I think we’re well past the era when mascots exist in video games.” He went on to say, “Even with Crash [Bandicoot] era, it was the top selling game and not it’s official mascot.” He explained that, as we are getting older, we “want to play games with more mature themes”. He may just have a point there.
Even if he does, that’s just his opinion. I, for one, would say mascots do exist (Mario, Sonic, Donkey Kong, anyone?). Mark Cerny has a lot of experience in the industry, so his opinion sure is valid. You can see the full interview below.
