Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to be the closing point for the Big Boss timeline in the Metal Gear universe. In the game, Big Boss, who is referred to in the E3 2013 trailer as Punished Snake, will be rebuilding Mother Base into what ultimately becomes the very base we first slipped into in the original Metal Gear, Outer Heaven, but no further details about the story or which of the new characters will be on Snake’s side have been announced. The game is set to be the very first Metal Gear game to be open world, boasting real-time weather, realistic passage of time, and random enemy spawning to further simulate being behind enemy lines. It will be the first one to use Kojima Productions’ FOX Engine, too.
The game will feature a ton of ways to get around the (presumably) big map, including, but not limited to, Jeeps, tanks, the horse The Boss once owned, and an extraction helicopter. To assist in dealing with the randomly generated enemy patrols further from enemy bases, new sneaking techniques have been developed, such as hanging off of the saddle of The Boss’ horse when you pass by foot soldiers (because that is SO effective) or diving to either side when you see a searchlight coming your way. Real-time sandstorms will come in when you least expect (and likely won’t want), interfering with your sight and possibly making extraction via helicopter out of the question. There will even be randomly generated herds of livestock specifically programmed to block the road in front of a truck with some available room for you on the truck’s bed, should such a truck generate. Needless to say, there will be a lot for you to do when you’re not out killing/knocking out enemies for the story.
Eli is quite obviously young Liquid Snake. Quiet appears to be the usual sniper boss that has been a staple in the Metal Gear series since Sniper Wolf made her debut. Code Talker reminds me of a Vulcan Raven type of character (mysterious, talks in code, etc). One of the un-named characters appears to be Psycho Mantis. Looks like an all-around great game.
Do you think Metal Gear Solid V is shaping up to be “The Best Is Yet To Come”? Do you disagree? Post all thoughts below, thanks!
