During Nintendo’s first six months of its fiscal year, only 460,000 Wii U units were sold making it about 43.4% and 5% of its annual target of 9 million.
Nintendo reported selling 300,000 Wii U consoles during the second quarter (July through September) making a 87 percent increase over it’s previous quarter. What this means is that roughly around 100,000 Wii U consoles were sold each month. That’s not good news for Nintendo’s objective of selling 9 million Wii U consoles by the end of this fiscal year. Compare that to the hardware sales of the Nintendo 3DS, it has reached 3.89 million units with only 22 percent of it’s full-year target of 18 million. Software sales of the 3DS was that of 16.37 making a 40 percent increase on fiscal year 2013.
Through all the doom and gloom of hardware sales on the Wii U are not good, software sales for the console saw a 400% increase in Q2 thanks to titles like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and Pikmin 3.
According to 4traders, Satoru Iwata is not happy with the Q2 results, but he believes a major strategic overhaul isn’t necessary and is currently riding on the holiday season to see if the success of the Wii U would change the company’s future direction. Nintendo executives according to Iwata will review Wii U’s holiday performance to determine the console’s future. Iwata believes that upcoming games like Super Mario 3D World and Wii Party U could turn the Wii U’s current situation to something that would reach their goal of selling 9 million Wii U consoles by the end of this fiscal year.
