Last week, Id Software co-founders, John Romero and Adrian Carmack announced they were working on a new First Person Shooter, today they launched a Kickstarter campaign for the project, Blackroom.
Blackroom is pitched as a 90s FPS set in a holographic simulation gone rogue and described as visceral and violent shooter with a mix of exploration and speed. The Kickstarter page shows skillful FPS movement techniques such as circle-strafing and rocket-jumping and also mentions secret rooms with twisted hidden passages. Blackroom, provided it’s campaign is successful it’s slated to release on Winter of 2018.
As mentioned before, Blackroom’s premise is very ambitious, you will fight through a wide variety of environment settings supposedly created by holo-deck technology (Star Trek Next Generation anyone?) created by a company called “HOXAR” (as in hoax?). Blackroom boasts a 10+ hour single player campaign, most popular shooters like Call Of Duty and Battlefield usually have single player campaigns that last about 3-4 hours. In the campaign you play as a Hoxar engineer sent to debug the anomalies.
The game will also feature multiplayer modes as well, the game will use Unreal Engine 4. Blackroom’s most exciting feature however will be that of being fully moddable, although nothing new, it’s always a welcome feature among PC gamers, no details of whether it will use Steam’s Worshop yet. The Kickstarter project is asking for 700,000 USD, which is good because it’s at least easier to reach than most of the other ambitious Kickstarter gaming projects these days.
