Once a major player in the console market with Nintendo, SEGA has since been a third-party publisher struggling to make it on multiple platforms. The efforts in retaining itself hasn’t done any good and restructuring will now happen.
SEGA announced a few days ago that it’s going through a ”group structure reform” on console gaming to refocus it’s efforts on the digital PC and mobile markets. This move, as it was planned since May 2014, will result in more than 300 jobs getting axe and it’s legendary San Francisco office being relocated to southern California likely by the summer time.
A SEGA Europe spokesperson issued a statement to Eurogamer about it’s UK-based developers Creative Assembly and Sports Interactive not being affected by the consultation process. Suggesting that the downsizing is on SEGA’s publishing business.
We are under consultation with a limited number of staff in the European publishing business and will be able to confirm decisions regarding any potential redundancies in the coming weeks.
This is sad news as SEGA was a pioneer in the gaming industry. What are your thoughts on these news?
