The latest Fire Emblem game coming out in 2016 will feature same sex marriage between the player-created main character, and another character in the game. This was confirmed by Nintendo, stating that Fates “includes the possibility for a same-sex marriage to take place between the main character created by the gamer and another character in the game.”
This is one of the first times Nintendo has supported same sex marriage in a game, but not the first time that they have been progressive in their games before. Many of their games have dealt with homosexual conversations or situations, like when Bowser and Booster kiss Mario in Super Mario RPG by accident.
Many of the more subversive topics like Vivian from Paper Mario 2 and Gracie Grace from Animal Crossing being originally trans in their Japanese versions were removed when localized.
It seems that as western culture becomes more progressive, Nintendo feels confident they can introduce concepts already prevalent in Japan to western audiences without fear of backlash. The recent Supreme Court ruling legalizing same sex marriage in all states is a good indicator of this.
